How To Design Your Own Home Gym

5 Tips for creating a home gym environment for great results from your exercise program.

By: Holly Leonard, CPT

With our fast pace society and constant struggle to find time for exercise, many are choosing to exercise at home. A home workout space makes it easy and conveinient to fit a daily workout into a hectic schedule.

Home exercise is not only convenient, but also creates a more private, less distracting, and comfortable environment that is often not found in health clubs. Designing the perfect home gym for your goals, space, and budget, ensures you’ll look forward to your workouts and fully utilize your equipment.

Designing a Home Gym:

Planning is the key to success – both for getting started and for the future. Listed below are 5 tips to guide you through the process of creating a great workout space:

1. Define Goals
The first place to start is with your personal fitness goals. Your personal fitness goals will determine your exercise program, thus, prioritizing the equipment most valuable to you. Whether your focus is on weight loss, general strength and conditioning, or overall fitness; you will benefit from investing in a combination of equipment for performing both cardiovascular and resistance training exercise.

2. Choose Your Space
Another important factor to consider is the amount of available space. Are you using a spare bedroom or a dedicated fitness room for your home gym? Or are you in a full living area with minimal space available? Even a full house can accommodate small pieces of equipment that can be stored in a closet or under the bed for removal during your workouts.

3. Make A Budget
Once you have chosen your space, create a budget for the equipment that supports your goals and space available. While your budget will influence the equipment you’re able to invest in (and your initial investment may be significant), ultimately savings are made in the long run by the elimination of “renting” endless monthly health-club memberships.

Listed below are equipment suggestions for 3 budget levels:

4. Invest In Quality Equipment
There is nothing worse than cheap equipment that breaks down or is uncomfortable to use. It’s important to note that there is a dramatic difference between consumer and commercial grade fitness equipment (think of the cheap, winding treadmill compared with the smooth workhorse models used in large health clubs).

Invest in the best equipment you can afford for your home gym, even if you have to purchase pieces separately over time. High-quality equipment lasts for years (in most cases, a lifetime) and will provide an enjoyable experience each time you workout – ensuring you’ll look forward to using it!

5. Make Your Space Welcoming
Once you’ve chosen the right equipment for your goals, space, and budget, make sure to add the finishing touches to make your space welcoming.

Consider what type of environment supports your efforts in accomplishing your health and fitness goals. While some enjoy a wall-mounted television and DVD player, others prefer listening to their favorite I-Pod or mp3 player.

A great benefit of working out at home is that you get to decide what works best for you – and don’t have to compromise with other gym members.

Conclusion

Designing a home gym helps many fit workouts into a hectic schedule. Take time to consider these tips to ensure creating an environment you’ll benefit from and look forward to using for years.
